HCG BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS (POLICY)
Board of Directors Job Description and Qualifications
Position Title: Board Member
Responsibility: The job of the board is to represent the families of the school in determining and requiring accomplishment of the school’s mission and vision. Supervision: The Board Member will supervise the school Principal. The board will produce assurance of School Principal performance.
Service: The Board Member recognises that this role includes servanthood in accordance with Matthew 20:17, “And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant.” The Board Member will serve on the board for a three-year term with a maximum of two consecutive terms.
Accountability: The Board Member will report to the “Board” of HCGS.
Reviews: The Board or a Board Committee will do an annual review of performance and salary of the lead staff of HCGS.
Salary and Benefits: The Board Member will not receive any salary or benefits of any kind. The Board Member position is completely voluntary.
Accessibility: The Board Member will make every reasonable attempt to attend all board meetings and board functions as directed by the Board. Participation in other school events, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and other similar activities may also be needed.
Required Personal Qualities
The Board Member shall:
1 Have received Jesus Christ as his/her personal Saviour.
2 Believe that the Bible is God’s Word and standard for faith and daily living.
3 Be a Christian role model (Luke 6:40) in attitude, speech and actions toward others. This includes being committed to God’s Biblical standards for moral conduct.
4 Be a member in good standing at a local, evangelical church, which has a Statement of Faith in agreement with the school’s Statement of Faith.
5 Show by example the importance of the study of Scripture, prayer, witnessing, and unity in the Body of Christ.
6 Be in whole-hearted agreement with the school’s Statement of Faith.
7 Have the spiritual maturity and personal leadership qualities to “train up a child in the way he should go.”
8 If married, have the support of the spouse and minor children.
9 Understand Biblical principles of stewardship and make responsible use of school resources, which include the individual’s time and talent.
10 Understands and is committed to a Biblical worldview and Christian philosophy of education.
* Being a Christian Role Model is a bona fide Board Member requirement of Highlands Christian Grammar School. Cause for termination and dismissal may include, but is not limited to, any one or more of the following: homosexuality, heterosexual activity outside of marriage, intemperance, abuse of a student or faculty or family, absence without notification, abandonment of position, neglect of duty, deviation from scriptural standards, or any conduct tending to bring discredit upon the school or upon the board member that causes a diminishing of his/her effectiveness as a Christian Role Model for the students of Highlands Christian Grammar School (Romans 12:1-2; I Corinthians 6:9-20; Ephesians 4:1-11, 5:3-5; I Thessalonians 4:3-8; I Timothy 4:12; II Timothy 2:19-22; I Peter 1:15-16, 2:15-17; I John 3:1-3).
Additional Personal Qualities
The Board Member shall:
1 Recognise the role of parents as primarily responsible before God for their children’s education and be prepared to assist them in that task.
2 Demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality.
3 Meet everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism.
4 Maintain a personal appearance and deportment that is consistent with school policy (see the student policy handbook).
5 Respectfully submit and be loyal to constituted authority.
6 Notify the Board Chairman of any policy he/she is unable to support.
7 Refuse to use or circulate confidential information inappropriately.
8 Make an effort to appreciate and understand the uniqueness of the HCGS community.
9 Demonstrate organisation skills, flexibility and sound decision-making skills.
Essential Functions of the Position
In regard to communication, the Members of the Board shall:
1 Provide assistance and consulting to the “lead staff” (ie. the Principal) in the area of Personnel Management, Financial Leadership, Board Relationship, Ministry and Educational Leadership.
2 Communicate in a positive and effective manner with a wide variety of customers including administration, board, teachers, parents, students, donors, contractors and vendors.
3 Assure proper communication and compliance with local, county and state regulatory agencies.
4 Refer any media inquiries to the Board and/or appropriate school leadership.
5 Immediately notify the Board and/or appropriate school staff of any condition that may bring adverse or potentially adverse media, legal or financial risk to the corporation.
6 Maintain complete confidentiality in all matters. In regard to organisation, the Members of the Board shall be responsible to:
1 Attend regularly Scheduled quarterly Board meetings
2 Attend designated committee meetings
3 Attend special meetings called by the Chairman
4 Be active in other appropriate school activities that require parental and Board participation
5 Research, review and summarisation of articles and reports to the Board
In regard to Human Resources, the Members of the Board shall:
1 Conduct annual performance and benefit reviews of the school Principal.
2 Analyse and summarise pertinent information for decision making at Board meetings.
In regard to Development, the Members of the Board shall, from time to time as deemed necessary by the Board, be involved in raising funds for the school.

1 What will be expected of me as a responsible board member?
2 Can I make the time available to effectively serve on the board—to do the necessary homework, to attend meetings and board retreats, etc.?
3 What qualifies me to serve on the board? What would I bring to the board in terms of my experience, abilities, interests, resources, and relationships?
4 How long of a commitment am I willing to make to this organisation?
5 Do I really believe in the organisation goals and purpose?
6 Do I feel truly supportive of the organisation’s Principal, Administrative staff, and Teachers?
7 Is my spouse supportive of my serving on this board?
8 Are there any hidden things in my life that would disqualify me from serving, if they were known?
9 Is there any reason I should not serve on the board?
10 Do I sense God’s leading in this decision?
